Cooling Season Tips

Homeowners can take several simple steps to maximize the performance of their cooling systems. By following these tips, you can stay comfortable while keeping energy costs down.

Setting Your Temperature

People often set their thermostat temperature too low, thinking the house will cool down quicker. What actually happens is that your air conditioner runs longer trying to reach the temperature you have set.

Try setting your thermostat at 24°C. If you find that’s comfortable, just leave it there. If it’s still too hot, try adjusting down a degree at a time until you reach a temperature that you find comfortable.

Check Your Furnace Filter

Most homes use the furnace fan and duct system to distribute cool air. If you have a dirty furnace filter, air flow is restricted. This can even cause your unit to freeze up.

It’s a great idea to install a new filter early in the cooling season.

Clean Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor unit can get clogged up with pollen, dust and grass clippings. Simply using a hose to clean it off can improve efficiency.

Keep bushes and plants near your outdoor unit trimmed back.

Run Your Furnace Fan

Your thermostat will have a setting that allows you to run your furnace fan continuously. The air in your basement is always cooler. Running your fan helps to balance the air temperature throughout the house.

With newer furnaces, the fans are very energy efficient. You won’t notice it on  your hydro bill.

Heating Vents

In a 2 storey home with an older furnace a common issue is the difference in temperature between the main and upper levels during the summer. A standard but incorrect solution is closing vents. People think that if they close vents on the main floor, the system will push more cool air to the upper floor.

This strategy often results in reduced cooling performance. If you have a minimal number of vents you should not close any. If you have more vents than you need then perhaps you can shut some. In general, it is usually OK to close vents in a basement. It is on the main floor that you probably do not want to close any vents.
