Furnace Maintenance & Tune-Ups

If you own a natural gas furnace we recommend having a licensed technician look at it once per year. Find out what’s included in an annual furnace maintenance visit, how to get your furnace ready for fall, and how to change your furnace filter.

There are three main reasons to keep an annual maintenance schedule for your furnace:

Furnace Efficiency

A properly maintained furnace will emit fewer greenhouse gases and will use less energy. Homeowners can reduce their energy bills by up to 10% by keeping their furnace tuned-up.

Furnace Warranty

If your furnace is still under warranty, manufacturers require annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid. If you purchase a new furnace from Salmon Plumbing and Heating, we’ll remind you every year that your maintenance is due.

Furnace Safety

A furnace is a gas appliance and its exhaust is CO, which is deadly if it’s not being vented properly. As part of your annual maintenance, Salmon Plumbing and Heating will check CO levels around your furnace. Learn more about carbon monoxide safety.

Bill Salmon talks about how to keep your furnace warranty valid:

Host: Bill, what about warranty coverage and routine maintenance? Do they go hand in hand?

Bill Salmon: Oh, absolutely. People always ask, "Well, it's only two years old. It's only three years old." A lot of people have 10-year parts and labour coverage, and if you read those extended warranties, you'll see that they tell you that you need to maintain your equipment, and if you don't, the coverage is cancelled. What you don't want is for a part to fail and then find out that it isn't covered.

So maintenance has that extra benefit. It not only makes sure your equipment is efficient and gives you the performance, but if something goes wrong, you've kept the coverage that you have. That's really, really important. A lot of people don't understand that. They believe they've got 10-year parts and labour, and that's it. In fact, we had trouble in our own company: we'd have customers three years out who'd say, "No, I don't need maintenance. I've got 10-year parts and labour." So we had to change the way we ran that program, so that it was very clear to our customers that they had to do maintenance. The worst thing in the world is when, in year four or year six, a customer has a major failure and finds out it's not covered. That's not a nice experience.

Host: Not at all.

Bill Salmon: So do the maintenance and look after your equipment. Remember, you're also maintaining your investment. I think most people can understand that equipment is going to last longer if you look after it.

When Is It Time for a New Furnace?

Bill Salmon talks about the advantages of new equipment:

Bill Salmon: As for the reasons you might want new equipment, the big one most people know is energy savings. Newer equipment is certainly more efficient. Then there's reliability: your old equipment might be ready to break down, and new equipment should be more reliable. In many cases there's a lot more comfort. There are government incentives, you get warranty protection, and maybe your current unit is due for repairs right now, so you'll avoid having to spend that money. There are lots of reasons to look at new equipment.

We're happy to come out. We provide free estimates. We come out, go through it, and explain to people what they can expect.

What amazed me: a customer called me back. We'd put in a furnace for him last fall, and he said, "If I'd known how quiet it would be, and how much more comfortable we'd be..." He has a split-level home, and it was much more comfortable and much quieter. The big thing for him was that his air conditioner worked way better, because these new furnaces circulate air much better. He said, "I'd have done it years ago."

So there are hidden benefits to new equipment in terms of comfort. All equipment isn't created equal. New equipment really does have features that benefit your comfort.
