Shutting Down Your Air Conditioner for the Winter

As the temperatures drop and heating season begins, it’s time to give your air conditioner a well-deserved rest. Properly shutting down your A/C for the winter not only helps protect it from the elements but also ensures it’s ready to run efficiently next summer. Here’s a quick guide to doing it right.

Turn off the power

Turn off the breaker on your electrical panel. This prevents the air conditioner from accidentally turning on during a warm spell, which could cause damage if ice or snow has built up.

Clean the unit

Remove any leaves, dirt, or debris that may have collected around or inside the condenser. A gentle rinse with a garden hose can help clear away grime – just be sure to let it dry completely afterward.

Hose off AC Unit
Wash off your air conditioner with a hose.

Cover the unit (optional)

Place a piece of plywood weighted down with some bricks over the top of the unit. This helps keep out snow, ice, and debris. Air Conditioner covers can trap moisture which can lead to corrosion.
